The mountaineer is an iconic hotel in Asheville. Great location and great value. It is old, I think built in the 20s but back when it was done by craftsmen. It is very retro, so if you are looking for a Hampton Inn, this isn't it. The bathroom was yellow tile, tub and toilet. I've heard others are pink. The tv is probably from the eighties, so if you are going to Asheville to sit in your hotel room and watch tv you might be let down. The rooms were clean. I suggest spending the $3 extra for the bigger rooms. They are up on the hill and give a better view and probably lesIs road noise. Our room was very quiet. The mattresses weren't the best but better than lots of 'better' hotels I've stayed. The old Greek man at the desk has been there since the 60s and is quite the character... Very friendly. I first heard about this place from a friend who stayed there when she was working width a film crew. I wod stay there again and would suggest it for a normal getaway weekend or business.... Maybe not your honeymoon, anniversary, birthday, etc. Classic!
Some people didn't like the fact that the door only has one lock. Don't expect breakfast to be a waffle and egg thing...learn what continental means! It is fine if you want a quick pastry coffee and fruit. Otherwise, the waffle house is just down the road. Also the classic hillbilly signs could be considered stereotypical of North Carolinians in general, but coming from coastal nc I know it's only western nc people that are like that! ;-)
It's cheap and really close to the venue we come up to Asheville to visit. All of my friends stay there. Oh, and those neon signs are fancy :p
It was handy for where we were going. The price was right, And the wee desk attendant was friendly and helpful.
The old look and feel.
Could use some updates, tv didn't work well.
Owner was friendly and the view from the rooms higher up was good. Everything worked in the room and the heater was effective.
Beds were hard, very basic breakfast.
It was in a good location- not too far from the Biltmore and close to several restaurants.
I did not think the rooms would be quite as shabby from the photos. The carpet needed replacement and none of the windows opened. The bathroom and sink area were clean but that is about the best I can say. No ventilation in the bathroom-in fact the bathroom had a vent into the bedroom so you can only imagine...There were no temp controls in the room and the place was hot. The staff were very nice and helpful but the place needs an update. Given the price though, and having spent time in hostels, it was about what I expected. I have stayed in worse places.
Rooms were clean, location good . Price was right . The host made us feel at home and was a very cordial gentleman . If you stay there be sure to go to the office and see him. Stay here for the low price, not the ambiance. Excellent bed.
Quaint older motel with outdated furnishings. The room did not have a thermostat and it was like an oven. We opened the door the second night to cool off enough to sleep. I swear the tv , even though there was cable , was old enough to have tubes .
We did mot like it, it was too hot and there eas no microwave.
The Mountaineer Inn is a throwback to a 1960 tourist court and the facility is rather spartan compared to a modern motel. But the wi- fi worked, the staff was very friendly and helpful, it was clean and the location is excellent with many restaurants nearby as well as a big mall. It isn't the Grove Park Inn (where we have also stayed) but we didn't expect it to be. And the price per day is also a throwback to an earlier time. It is a real bargain and we will stay there again.
There were several dozen channels available on the tv but I couldn't find cnn or any news channel. Our room was in the front nearest the very busy Tunnel Road and the manager apologized for that but it was his only remaining non-smoking room. But my wife and I slept like logs and were not bothered by the traffic noise. Others might be and should specify a room away from the street.
Very nice gentleman in office was welcoming.
The guy at the front desk is an awesome Greek guy who tells hilarious mother in law jokes and always wants to know where my grandfather is from. I would definitely return to this hotel because of the close proximity to downtown and it is the best value for the money. This hotel definitely has a lot of character.
The matresses in some of the rooms aren't that comfortable. Ask for room 102 with the new matresses.
The elderly staff were very friendly.
The bed was only slightly more comfortable than my floor. It is not possible to individually control the heat/air in each room. The carpet was dirty and the room had a funky odor. The TV was so old it was made before remote controls were invented.
The room was large, clean, smelled good, none of that musty old room odor, shower was large and clean, loved the tiles. If you are looking for a large, clean room I would say go for it, but ask for a room with new beds.
I have slept on ground more comfortable than the bed. I was in town for a juggling festival and did not get in the room till 1:30 am tired, sore and ready to sleep. However I did not sleep due to the bed, the sheets were clean. But since it was so late I did not ask for another room, mistake on my part which I soon regretted, I finally got up at nine and left, still tired and more sore.
Friendly staff. Had fridge, coffee pot--in room.
Limited parking at upper sections of rooms. Only four channels on tv
It was convenient to all the places I was going (I had my car, but was close enough to walk to many destinations), it was a bargain price, and although a bit rustic, it was certainly adequate for my needs. The staff was very friendly and helpful with directions and advice, and were genuinely concerned that you had a good stay. Also, there was a stoplight at the entrance, so it was easy to get in and out, even if you were making a left turn to get in. Great restaurant within walking distance for breakfast that the staff let me know about - The Corner Stone.
Although the maid service brought fresh towels every day, they didn't remake the bed. No biggie, as it was just myself this trip, but it would have been nice.
